A very special thank you is in order for Michael Pritchard and the staff and management of the Anthology Club in San Diego. I consider it an honor to have been invited to host the benefit for our dear friend Carl Evans, Jr., of Fattburger. I had plenty of help though. The Master of Ceremonies was yours truly, GroovinU.com President, Gene Harris and the co-hosts included Independent Recording Artist, Mariea Antoinette, Marketing Specialist, Lisa Jackson and Channel Eight's, Larry Himmel.
Several different benefits in California have aided Carl Evans, Jr., a founding member of the veteran San Diego-based Smooth Jazz group Fattburger. Evans is currently in the middle of some serious health challenges. On December 10, he underwent surgery to remove his left leg below the knee. This surgery was necessary to continue his ongoing battle against diabetes. On January 1, doctors performed another operation.
To help with medical costs and future care, the Anthology club in San Diego hosted two benefit concerts on January 20. Numerous musicians performed, including bassist Nathan East of Fourplay and Ricky Lawson of the Yellowjackets. So many great performers played like Guitarists, Peter Sprague and Dave Millard, Saxophonists Charles McPherson Sr, Daniel Jackson, Reggie Smith and Trevor Orr, Drummers Charles McPherson, Jr., Carlos Vasquez and Roger Friend, Trumpeters Brian Lynch and Gilbert Castellanos, Keyboardist Rob Whitlock, James Williams, Clarence Bell and Mikan Zlatkovich, Bassists Marshall Hawkins and Glen Fisher, Violinist Jaime Kim, Vocalists Aubrey Faye, Barbara Jamerson, Amber Whitlock, Stellita, Percussionists, Emilio Camacho, Kiko Cornejo and Luis Manuel and the New Hope Friendship Choir plus so many more attended.
All net proceeds benefit the Carl Evans, Jr., Health Relief Fund through Washington Mutual. Donations can be made directly to this fund at any time at any Washington Mutual bank. For more information go to www.fattburger.com.
Fattburger itself - which now features Keyboardist, Carl Evans, Jr., Guitarist, Evan Marks, Bassist, Mark Hunter, Drummer, Kevin Koch and Percussionist, Tommy Aros, held another benefit show for Evans on Feb. 10 at Humphrey's in San Diego.
This is the second setback for Fattburger in recent years. In September of 2006, Fattburger saxophonist Hollis Gentry died two years after being involved in a serious automobile accident. We miss you Hollis.
